“Life’s full of questions, isn’t it, Batman? Though, naturally, I prefer to think of them as riddles.”

Just like a vast majority of evildoers, Edward Nigma’s decent into madness stemmed from early childhood abuse. Edward had always been an excellent student, and after he received high scores on some important tests in school, his father, unable to grasp the fact that his son was brilliant and believing he had cheated, beat him out of envy. This would happen often, with every test Edward would take and every report card that came in the mail. He told Edward the world didn’t take kindly to cheaters, and Edward swore he wasn’t one every time.

His childhood experiences left him with a strong internal desire to tell the truth, and not only prove his innocence to his father, but to show the rest of the world just how much smarter he was than them. This desire began to manifest itself in the form of his obsession with riddles. Once he graduated from high school, Edward decided to skip college, believing there really wasn’t more out there for him to learn. He instead opened a crooked carnival booth involving a diabolical puzzle. The customers would compete to solve the puzzle for prize money, but if they failed to do so, they would have to pay Edward a small fee for competing. In every case, Edward rigged the puzzle in advance to ensure that the customer would always fail. He was always one step ahead of them all.

It wasn’t long before he became unsatisfied with the small pickings of the puzzle booth. He closed the carnival attraction and wondered just what he’d do with his life next. There were plenty of jobs the public should be happy to hand him, but he new he was better than that. Then finally it hit him. He was clever enough to use his wits for crime and baffle the upholders of the law, and that would be how he’d make his fortune and prove his father wrong. He’d win that money with his wits, fair and square.

When crimes started popping up at alarming rates with the usual suspect’s calling cards attached, Edward thought nothing of it. But suddenly, his own calling card cropped up on murder victims he hadn’t even touched. Edward was livid. How could someone dare to impersonate him? How could they even manage to? The thought simply baffled him, and it was an injustice he wouldn’t take lying down. He knew he had to get to this scoundrel before the police, or the Batman, did. He’d give that copy-cat a piece of his brilliant mind. It was a riddle for the Riddler.
